The Norwegian interior design trend of “friluftsliv” – living in nature – has been brought indoors, with the introduction of a new line of furniture from Danish company Fritz Hansen.
The what is scandinavian design is a trend that has been popular in Norway for the last few years. It brings open-air living indoors, and can be seen as a way to make your home more ecological.
Hygge, the idea of enhancing our warm and comfortable experience at home, became ubiquitous precisely as Covid-19 — with all of its stay-at-home requirements — took shape. As the epidemic allows for greater socializing, “friluftsliv,” a Norwegian sister idea that involves enjoying outside life, has emerged (regardless of the season).

The concept of friluftsliv — pronounced “free-loves-liv” — is based on activity and spending time with loved ones, and it emphasizes fresh air, nature, and endless experiences. Do you need evidence of its ubiquity? Take a look at the phrase’s Instagram hashtag, which has 1.2 million posts, and you’ll see families and friends camping, kayaking, hiking, fishing, foraging, and more all over the globe.
Lisa Gotwals Photography/Bartone Interiors
Bartone Interiors’ Friluftsliv style in action.
Friluftsliv seeks to integrate the outdoors into our indoor environments when combined with interior design. “Nature has a tremendous effect on our entire well-being, both physically and emotionally,” says Kristin Bartone of Bartone Interiors in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. “We remain connected even when we are inside by incorporating natural elements into our interior spaces. This approach reduces stress and promotes environmental stewardship.”
How can we bring more friluftsliv into our homes, specifically? “Shoppers may embrace [the trend] by integrating products that help link them with nature, such as landscape-inspired wall art, indoor plants, or organic materials,” says Dayna Isom Johnson, an Etsy trend specialist. Friluftsliv gives consumers a connection to nature and its soothing, grounding effects after a year and a half spent mainly inside, with many continuing to work or study from home.”
Friluftsliv is similar to the rapidly growing biophilic design trend of bringing the outdoors inside, according to Wayfair Professional design manager Erin Dalton-Cooney, because both “bring natural elements (or the illusion of the outdoors) into the home or workplace to promote mindfulness and decrease mental fatigue.” She suggests using textured wallpaper, such as grasscloth or sisal, as well as plenty of greenery, earth tones, natural materials like rattan and cane, and “placing furniture near windows or with a view outdoors to establish a healing connection.”
“Incorporating a flowery wallpaper or hexagonal tiles in your bathroom may unconsciously generate a connection or memory of time spent outdoors,” says Heather McKeown, creator of Land and Sky Designs in New Jersey.
And don’t worry, friluftsliv may be used in your open-air areas as well. “Friluftsliv is [also] intended to make the colder winter months tolerable if you want to go outside,” explains Kristen Gall, president and shopping specialist at Rakuten Rewards, who adds that even if our homes are as warm as they can be, consumers still want to go outside – even in the dead of winter! “This desire to go outside prompts home décor consumers to purchase items that warm up outside areas, such as fire pits and tables, space heaters, thick blankets, and slippers, so they can still enjoy the winter while being outside.”
Find your friluftsliv cheat sheet below, which includes artwork, candles, décor, furniture, and entertaining necessities all designed to help you feel more connected to nature both inside and outside your house. “It is in our fundamental nature to be linked to the outside world and elements,” McKeown explains succinctly. Natural connections may be incorporated into our home surroundings to inspire and remind us of the simple joys of being in the vast outdoors.”

You know how you feel a warm glow after visiting your neighborhood farmer’s market? Imagine being able to connect to Mother Earth’s energy from the comfort of your own home… You may now, due to Lettuce Grow’s brilliant Farmstand.
Lettuce Grow, founded by Zooey Deschanel, uses a vertical hydroponic system called Farmstand to offer everyone an immediate, fool-proof green thumb. It’s self-watering, self-fertilizing, and can grow up to 36 pre-sprouted plants at once in a fraction of the time it would take to establish a home garden, for example. Buyers may pick from more than 200 seedlings (ranging from berries and vegetables to flowers, herbs, and leafy greens), and if the weather turns bad, the Farmstand can be relocated inside or out – all you need is four square feet of space and power (and Glow Rings if you’re going indoors). Farmstand will make an impact wherever it falls, with sizes ranging from 3’8″ (12 plants) to 6’1″ (36 plants).

The accompanying rattan basket, though, is our favorite feature.
