AA indie sandbox MMO Galaxies of Eden discusses classic vs. action combat switch and skill balancing

So it’s pretty obvious that MMOs are having a renaissance of sorts, but how does it work for action-orientated MMOs like Galaxies of Eden ? The game is an action-based MMO where you can switch between 1st person and 3rd person perspectives, both of which are further split into 1st person mode (movement) and 3rd person mode (combat). 1st person mode is by far the most popular mode of play; with the ability to move around freely and multi-target skills to use on enemies, it’s a very fun way to play. However, combat is where the game seems to miss the mark.

In February, Demere released a gameplay trailer for its upcoming sci-fi sandbox MMO, Galaxies of Eden. In the trailer, a fighter pilot flies a heavily armored space fighter conducting a mission against a monstrous beast. As you can imagine, this is a far cry from traditional MMORPG combat, as the focus is on skill and combat strategy rather than button-mashing attacks.

Game developers are highly creative, but their years of study into game mechanics often results in mundane or simplistic game play. This leaves the gamer feeling that the game they want to play is not being made, or that it has been made, but not correctly. The solution is to play the game in the development teams own sandbox, which I have found to be very effective. The sandbox is designed to allow players to try out different combinations of mechanics, which make for a faster, more engaging playing experience.

Galaxies of Eden, a new sandbox MMORPG developed by MIR Cybernetics Corporation, was featured a month ago. It’s ridiculously ambitious, with an alpha scheduled for early 2022, a social-gameplay-friendly feature list, and clear Star Wars Galaxies references. And, as previously said, the game is not yet soliciting for money.

MIR has added its first dev blog to its website, focusing on the game’s combat types. “We’ve observed a change in the MMORPG genre over the last several years,” the developers add. “Older, more conventional MMORPGs opted for a slower pace of battle, with users pointing and clicking on each skill before waiting a few seconds to see the outcome, while most contemporary MMORPG games have grown more action-oriented.” Slower-paced tab-target games, according to MIR, are better for accessibility and non-combat courses, while action gaming is better with controls that are more suited to it. What is the solution? In the guise of a “Action Mode / Social Mode switch mechanism,” the game does both. The social mode works similarly to a “traditional MMORPG.” And then there’s Action Mode…

“Players may flip into Action Mode by pressing a single key, and then return to Social Mode by hitting the same key. This transition may be made independent of the player’s current actions. You might be in the midst of a difficult dance performance when you take out a gun to protect yourself from aggressive animals. In Galaxies of Eden, we’ve designed Action Mode to be a first-class citizen. That isn’t to argue that Social Mode isn’t essential; it’s simply that Action Mode isn’t thrown in as an afterthought. Galaxies of Eden offers a genuine third-person shooting feel in Action mode. Weapons have recoil and spread, and even tiny, essential elements like floating battle text adapt to make the most of Action Mode’s rapid pace.”

The dev blog also goes into detail on the game’s active and passive abilities, pointing out that skills are limited at 100 points, and players are given 200 points to distribute. MIR claims that “[m]ost of the end-game content can be accomplished with just one skill at level 100.” It aims to balance the system with loadouts and class combinations that will be recognizable to fans of old-school sandboxes; it will also try to balance abilities such that they function differently in PvE and PvP.

The studio adds, “As a tiny independent business, we can’t guarantee you the moon and stars.” “At this time, it is physically impossible for us to produce a AAA-level game, so don’t be upset if your AAA aspirations aren’t realized in our alpha stage. However, since MMORPGs are service-based games, they are continuously updated, and we will continue to improve Galaxies of Eden throughout its growth. We have a strong strategy in place to take the game from independent to AAA quality. But keep in mind that it will be a lengthy road, so don’t set your expectations too high.”

Galaxies of Eden is a sandbox space MMO in which players create their own space-faring empires. Recently, the development team released a video announcing a change to the combat system. The video describes a new combat system where players choose between classic and action combat. In classic combat, players click on a target to attack, while action combat lets players attack by clicking on a target and then holding the mouse button..
